Over at Read/WriteWeb Richard MacManus has highlighted 10 Semantic Web Apps to Watch and included AdaptiveBlue in the list.

Richard leads with a good definition of Semantic Apps: “A key element is that Semantic Apps all try to determine the meaning of text and other data, and then create connections for users… Nova Spivack of Twine, noted that data portability and connectibility are keys to these new semantic apps - i.e. using the Web as platform.”

It’s an interesting list that’s peppered with new, exciting companies. Startups like Twine, TripIt, Spock, ClearForest, and of coure AdaptiveBlue are emerging and using “Semantic Web and Web 2.0 technologies to create new semantic applications.”

As Alex wrote last week, innovations from Web 2.0 are becoming ubiquitous and with ubiquity we’re seeing the emergence of new infrastructure. Infrastructure that can be innovated on top of. What we’re seeing on the list are 10 start-ups that are leveraging this emerging infrastructure to create the next wave of innovation.

At AdaptiveBlue we’re working to bring you a richer browsing experience by adding semantical understanding to links. Taking a pragmatic, top-down approach to semantics we’re able to determine the meaning of everyday objects - books, movies, music, stocks, etc. and create contextually correct connections for users. SmartLinks point to objects rather than pages and through this a web of pages goes away and a web of things starts to emerge. This is a powerful concept and one that will bring you real benefit.

While the companies on the list may be new to you today, many will make a profound impact on our web experience in the years to come. It’s worth exploring each company that Richard highlights in depth - you’ll start to see and appreciate the potential for the web in the years to come.
