Creating SmartLinks and SmartLink Feeds for Your Stocks

Guess what mom, we are on Wallstrip! Thank you Howard, we will not let you down. Even if we will you’ve got so much awesome content it won’t matter.

But seriously, we are very excited to release support for stocks in BlueOrganizer and SmartLinks. The official press release will go out next week, but right now, we want to tell all our blog readers how to create SmartLinks for stocks. Think of this as a companion post to the three minutes of pure goodness on Wallstrip.

So first of all, Stocks are just another concept in the BlueOrganizer. If you want to know how we added it, read this post. We assume that you got Firefox and BlueOrganizer. If not, you can get Firefox here and BlueOrganizer from adaptiveblue.com (total install time 3 minutes, you can do it now).

Okay lets create your first Stock SmartLink. Go to this page on Yahoo! finance: http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=GOOG. The irony of course is that it is a Google stock (it works for any stock in case you are wondering). Now look, the BlueOrganizer button lights up - this means we recognize the object, in this case it is a stock. Click the SmartMenu button and then you will see this:

Click the Create SmartLink menu and you will see the screen with two tiny pieces of code. The first one is a JavaScript that needs to be inserted into your blog template only once. The second chunk is just a link to the page + the blueKey (thats the magic). Paste this into your blog and you will get a good looking SmartLink like this: Google Inc.

Here is the list of sites that you can do exactly the same thing on, try them!

CBS MarketWatch, Google Finance, Stockpickr, Stocktickr, TheStreet.com, Yahoo Finance

If your favorite stock information site is not on this list, just drop us a line and we will roll it out.

Now, what if you want to create a list stocks - the SmartLink Feed? Easy. Very easy.

Go to pages that have stocks that you are interested in saving and publishing. For each stock, click on the BlueMark button in the browser and save it. After you do this a few times, your BlueMark sidebar would look like this:

Now that you got the stocks you want, select Create SmartLink Feed from the BlueMenu. Select Create SmartLink Feed button, then select Stocks collection and click Generate Script (if you want to publish by tag or filter you can do that too). Take the single line of JavaScript and put it on your blog. It is that simple!

Now if you are just a huge fan of Wallstrip and want to put the stocks that Lindsay talks about,
you can copy the list below by clicking the Grab me button.

And as always, please contact us if you got feedback or need help!
