Glue Labs: Introducing Replies

Glue 2cents with reply By far the most requested feature in Glue is the ability to reply to someone’s 2cents. Today, 2cents provides a playful succinct way to comment on a book, a movie or a music album, but a lot of users and the team feel like there can be much more engagement if people can reply to each other. The next version of Glue will make it possible to reply to every two cents.

The challenge that we faced with delivering this feature is that we did not want to introduce additional screens just to show the conversation. We thought a lot about what is the best, most compact way to deliver this feature and we realized that People and Conversation always belong together. There is a natural way to organize friends around a thing that you visit - friends who added 2cents, friends who liked and then friends who visited.

Glue Conversation view

So first you will see the list of friends who left 2cents, then you will see the grid of friends who liked it and then you will see the grid of friends who visited it. With this arrangement, the most important information is on top. It is also easy to figure out how many of your friends liked or left 2cents which acts like an instant recommendation.

In this view, each 2cents box will be expandable and beneath it you will see all the replies. To add yours you will hit the Reply button and type up your thoughts (limited to 140 characters, of course). Also, there will be a shortcut link to reply on every 2cents tip that you will encounter in Glue. This link will make it easy for you to jump right into the conversation.

Glue Inbox

Whenever someone replies to your 2cents or a thread that you participated in, a note in your Inbox. All replies will be stacked on top of each other in the reverse chronological order. Each reply will show you who replied and also what was the object that they replied about. You will be able to go back to this conversation by following the View Conversation link.

We are very excited about this feature and can’t wait to ship it. We think that it will make Glue much more fun and increase your engagement with friends and other Glue users. While this magic is being cooked in the Glue lab, please let us know what you think!

can i message someone directly without going through 2 cents?

that’s what i’d most likely want to do

if i see albert has visited daniel ariely’s predictably irrational, i’d just like to click on his face and message him and ask him about the book

Hi Fred,

We did not implement direct messaging, because we had a concern. If you see Albert on the book, and he said nothing, most likely he just looked at it and had no opinion.

We felt that in most cases this would be the case, and so rather than solving the issue via instant messaging we are working to encourage the users to LIKE and Add2cents more and then you can engage with them via reply.
